With the deepening development of agricultural green transformation and precision fertilization technology,n-Butylphosphorothiotriamide (NBPT) and dicyandiamide (DCD)As the core urease inhibitors and nitrification inhibitors in synergistic fertilizers, the compliance testing of their addition amounts is particularly critical.

On October 31, 2025, the State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standardization Administration Committee) officially released the national recommended standard GB/T 46742-2025"Simultaneous determination of n-butylphosphorothiotriamide and dicyandiamide in fertilizers by high-performance liquid chromatography" will be officially implemented on May 1, 2026.

The implementation of this standard marks that the quality control of synergistic ingredients in fertilizers in my country has entered a new stage of standardization and standardization.

Analysis of key points of GB/T 46742-2025 testing technology

In the past, the detection of NBPT (relatively low polarity) and DCD (strongly polar compounds) in fertilizers often required step-by-step extraction or analysis under multiple chromatographic conditions, which was a cumbersome process and caused high matrix interference. The new national standard breaks through this pain point:

  • Synergistic separation of dual targets:High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technology was used to optimize the retention behavior and chromatographic peak shape of NBPT and DCD, which have huge differences in polarity, under the same chromatographic conditions.

  • Matrix extraction and cleanup optimization:For complex fertilizer matrices such as compound fertilizers, the pretreatment is simplified into two steps: "ultrapure water ultrasonic extraction + 0.45 μm membrane filtration and purification" - NBPT and DCD have good water solubility, and pure water can achieve simultaneous and efficient dissolution of dual targets without the need for organic solvent systems; the method has been collaboratively verified by 18 laboratories, with a recovery rate of 92% to 107%, and the accuracy and robustness meet conventional quantitative needs.

  • Quality control requirements upgrade:Laboratories are required to use high-quality analytical reference materials with traceable sources and clear purity when establishing standard curves, matrix spiking tests, and daily testing.

CATO inspection standards help laboratories respond efficiently

In order to ensure that agricultural input testing laboratories, third-party testing agencies and fertilizer production companies can successfully integrate new and old testing methods, CATO can provide two key substances required to meet the requirements of the GB/T 46742-2025 standard:

  • N-butylphosphorothiotriamine (NBPT)|CAS 94317-64-3|Item No. CCPD102242

  • Dicyandiamide (DCD)|CAS 461-58-5|Item No. LCHM701300-WA
